by the following countries having signed the "Schengen
Convention" on June 19, 1990 in a little village
called Schengen in Luxembourg:
Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands,
Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy and Austria.
In April 2001 the following countries joined the "Schengen
space": Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden

and phone numbers of all the Schengen members and

website.
Having taken effect on May 26, 1995, it completes
the agreement signed on June 14, 1985 aiming the progressive
suppression of border controls between contracting
parties.
The visa is the placing of an official stamp in the
passport by the consulate of the country you want
to travel to.
Check to see if the citizens of your country must
have a visa to enter the "Schengen space".
A Schengen visa issued by an Embassy or Consulate
of the above countries allows the holder to travel
freely in all of these countries.
There are several types of visas:
- the transit visa
- the short visit visa
- the long visit visa
Where should you apply?
- If you intend to visit only one Schengen country,
you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that
particular country.
- If you intend to visit several Schengen countries,
you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate
of the country which is your main destination.
- If you intend to visit several Schengen countries,
but do not have a main destination, you should apply
for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country
which is your first point of entry.
- If you do not need a visa for the Schengen country
which is your main destination or first point of
entry, please note that you may require a visa for
other Schengen countries. You should then apply
at the Embassy of Consulate of the first Schengen
country which does require you to have a visa.
Applications should be made in person at the Embassy
or Consulate in whose jurisdiction you reside. If the
applicant cannot apply in person, he/she should contact
the Schengen Embassy or Consulate for further instructions.
Transit visa
The transit visa is required if you want to travel
through one or several "Schengen countries".
Short visit visa
For visits not exceeding three months to one of
the "Schengen countries", you have to apply for a
short visit visa at the consulate of the country which
is the principal destination. This visa may be valid
for one or multiple entries, provided the not interrupted
visit or the total of the successive visits do not
exceed three months.
What should you submit?
- A passport or official travel document with a validity that exceeds the intended stay of the applicant by at least three months plus a photocopy of all important pages. Please make sure your passport has a blank page to affix the visa.
Note: If the validity of the passport or travel document does not include one or more Schengen countries, it is still possible to obtain a visa. This visa will then be restricted to those Schengen countries which accept the passport or travel document.
- visa application form (download here). Please fill out the application form completely and legibly in black ink.
- 2 recent passport-size photographs (see Photograph Guidelines document). Please write your name on the back of each photo. DO NOT STAPLE the photos to your application form
- Proof establishing the purpose of your trip, for example a letter of invitation, proof of participation in group travel, etc. If the purpose of your trip is business, please present a letter from both companies in Luxembourg and the US.
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the cost of your intended stay (e.g. traveler checks, credit cards, bank statements, letter of employment, etc.).
- Proof of lodging, i.e. hotel reservations, rental of vacation home, stay with a family member or friend. In the latter case, a financial support document should be submitted signed by the family member or friend in question; the signature of this person has to be notarized by the local authorities of the Schengen country in question.
- Proof that you can continue your trip after your visit to the Schengen countries, i.e. onward or return non-endorsable airline ticket.
- If returning to the US, a valid US resident alien card or a valid US visa. Students should present a valid I-20; Exchange Visitors should present a valid I-66.
- If the applicant is a minor, please present written consent of a parent or guardian having the care and custody of the child. The signatures on this document have to be notarized.
- Proof of travel health/accident insurance.
Remarks The Consular Administration has full
authority to evaluate and request more documents than
those submitted by the applicant. The latter is hereby
informed that submitting the aforementioned documents
does not guarantee automatic issuance of the visa.
Please note that holders of a Schengen visa are
still subject to immigration control upon first entry
into a Schengen country and are therefore NOT guaranteed
automatic entry even when they hold a valid Schengen
visa
Please provide us with a contact number so we can
reach you if additional information is required.
Luxembourg generally responds to visa applications
within 10 business days. However, processing time
could take up to 4 weeks.
Long visit visa
Visas for visits of more than three months are national
visas issued by the consulate of the country you want
to stay in. Such a visa enables its holder to transit
through the territories of the other Contracting Parties
in order to proceed to the territory of the Contracting
Party which issued the visa.
Cost of a visa
Please contact the appropriate Schengen Embassy or Consulate for up-to-date consular fees.
